Townhead Community Hub

Overview

We designed the proposed development of a new Townhead Community Hub for Cumnock Juniors Community Enterprise (CJCE), with the intention of improving the community activities and sports coaching facilities for the Club.

Cumnock Juniors Community Enterprise (CJCE) evolved from a sports-centric organisation into a multi-faceted entity that greatly contributes significantly to the community’s health and wellbeing. The Club have outgrown their current facilities, which are no longer fit for purpose. Our brief is to provide modern, flexible spaces for sports and community activities.

Our client operates from Townhead Community Sports Hub and offers diverse services, including sports facilities, community health and well-being programmes and community events.

The operations for the Club were run out of the building to the north-east of the site, the proposed new facility is sited at the half-way line, which will improve the connection to the pitch and optimise the views.

The new facility design envisages state-of-the-art, flexible spaces for sports and community activities, allowing the Club to expand their offerings, catering to a broader spectrum of community interests and maximising facility use. It includes spacious changing rooms, accessible toilets, a large multi-purpose community space, and a generous kitchen.

Materials and finishes

The building materials must be hard-wearing, sustainable and of the local vernacular. We therefore opted for a brick solution at ground floor, and we are developing a louvre/shutter detail that give the ground floor windows the security they require. We have also opted for a steel frame solution as this is the most cost-effective means to achieve the shelter over the terracing.

Outcome

The project will make a marked difference to the day-to-day operations and income generating opportunities for our client. This will provide a bedrock for a long and sustainable future for Cumnock Juniors Community Enterprise. Upon receiving a successful planning application and funding, we will then move the project into Technical Design, following a critical appraisal of the building design with the project team.
