Our intent with the design was to create a high-quality experience that celebrates the tradition, innovation, science and industry of the distillery.
Working closely with the client team, we took a landscaped approach to laying out the building design so that we could reflect the nature of the brand within the wider industrial site. The centre has been designed to be set within attractive landscaped grounds with convenient car parking and service access.
Facilities within the Visitors Centre will include a cafe/restaurant offering, retail shop, tasting areas and flexible spaces capable of hosting meetings and functions, along with required ancillary service accommodation. The building will also function the gathering, information and departure point for tours of the distillery.
Materials and finishes
Material choices were informed by the industrial nature of the site. Specific design elements like the copper cladding and charred timber were influenced by the working cooperage that the visitor centre is home to.
Outcome
Links, approach, aspect and orientation inspired the final design concept proposal, which celebrates the industrial nature of the site, as well as enhancing the public facing approach. The proposal combines the brand heritage with the Scottish landscape, with the purpose of creating a brand home and attracting new visitors to the site.
